The Cyprus Montage

Drone Projects

Just a day after returning from my exhilarating trip to Norway, I found myself whisked away on a family vacation to the stunning land of Cyprus. As I reviewed the footage I had captured amidst Norway’s unpredictable weather, it became apparent that Cyprus offered an even more enticing opportunity to push the boundaries of my filmmaking equipment. Opting to wield the DJI Mini 3 Pro as my primary camera proved to be a strategic choice. Not only did it comply with the weight regulations set by European law, but its unobtrusive and virtually silent flight capabilities ensured minimal disruption for the fellow residents at our hotel.

The DJI Mini 3 Pro, despite its small size, packs a formidable punch in terms of technical ability. Boasting an impressive 4K 30fps video capture capability and the invaluable LOG colour profile feature, this compact marvel streamlined my post-production workflow by facilitating seamless colour grading. The LOG profile not only eased the process of fine-tuning colours but also granted me the artistic freedom to experiment with diverse visual aesthetics.

Upon our arrival at the picturesque location, the potential for capturing breathtaking footage was clear. Among the most captivating structures was the amazing silhouette of an abandoned shipwreck, emerging from the blue waters about 2.5 kilometres offshore. This maritime relic would serve as the ultimate test for the drone’s long-distance capabilities. As an environment teeming with mobile signals and Wi-Fi interference would usually impact a drones distance capability’s. However, on this occasion I managed to capture all the desired footage, even while stationed more than 2 kilometres away from the shoreline.

While distance presented no issues, the avian inhabitants, who had turned the shipwreck into there home proved to be a more spirited challenge. The drone’s presence ruffled the feathers of these pesky seagulls, causing a series of close encounters during flight. Recognising the need to maintain a peaceful coexistence with these belligerent birds, I opted for brief flights around the shipwreck, limiting my intrusion to a mere 10 minutes during the entire ten-day trip. Surprisingly, the avian resistance was less pronounced on land, affording me extended flight time with reduced risk. A similar approach was adopted in Paphos, where my flights were deliberately measured to ensure minimal disturbance to both the local wildlife and inhabitants of the bustling harbour.

While my Cypriot adventure followed my Norwegian escapade, I prioritised releasing the Cyprus montage ahead of the Norwegian footage. The sunnier conditions prevalent in Cyprus cast the scenery in a richer, more vibrant light, generating a wealth of data for post-production colour grading. This abundance of visual information alleviated concerns about potential image quality loss, allowing me to navigate post-production with heightened ease and efficiency. Consequently, the overall editing process was accelerated, resulting in a more swift release on Youtube.

Reflecting upon this creative endeavour and my subsequent choices in post-production, I acknowledge that there are numerous aspects I could have approached differently. A sense of introspection leads me to believe that my editing work might not fully encapsulate my creative capabilities. Perhaps a more dedicated investment of time and meticulous attention to detail in the post-production phase could have lead to an outcome that better resonated with my vision. Nonetheless, I am proud of my efforts, and recognise the invaluable lessons I acquired throughout this filmmaking journey.

I would like to thank you for investing your time in reading my blog post. If you have yet to do so, I invite you to go and watch my Cyprus video on YouTube, conveniently embedded at the bottom of this article. I hope that by viewing these films you will experience the same joy and satisfaction I did when creating them.
